Courses

Awakening to Yoga

Embodying the 8 Limbs of Yoga

Starts Sunday 28th February, 2pm - 5pm

There are many yogic paths. One of those paths is through The 8 Limbs of Yoga - a system set out in the classic yogic text of Patanjali, The Yoga Sutras (dated approx 400AD). This text was heavily influenced by the Buddhist traditions of India at the time. Therefore there is a strong focus on the ethical and moral aspects of one's spiritual practice and on meditation.

The 8 aspects or limbs of the yogic experience are known as 'Ashtanga Yoga: ash = 8, anga = limbs. (Please note this is different to the physical system also called Ashtanga Yoga). This 8-fold path prepares the practitioner for the state of meditation and beyond.

The 8 limbs are:

The Yamas & Niyamas (ethical and moral codes), Asana (physical posture), Pranayama (controlling the breath), Pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (liberation).

This series of 4 monthly 3-hour sessions will be a systematic, comprehensive and experiential journey into the 8 limbs of yoga. Please note it is not a study of The Yoga Sutras themselves, although naturally they will be referred to throughout the course. Each session will focus on different aspects and will include some theory, philosophy and discussion, physical practices, pranayama, meditation and/or yoga nidra and some contemplative practices to support practitioners to really bring each aspect into their life.

Handouts will be provided and a home practice (sadhana) will be given for the month between each session. There will also be some suggested reading. This is a yogic exploration in 4 parts. Each session can be taken individually, but please note individual sessions are only available as an online option, unless space in the studio is available nearer the time.

Bandhas & The Breath (coming soon)

'Bandha' means 'lock'. In yoga there are several locks that we can create with our bodies which have an affect on both a physical and an energetic level.

In this workshop we will explore the 4 main yogic locks - Mooladhara Bandha (the root lock), Uddiyanana Bandha (the stomach lock), Jalandhara (the throat lock)and Maha Bandha (the great lock).

Through a series of physical explorations and breathing techniques, we will identify the different areas in the body where these locks are located, understanding how they might offer us a deepening of our yoga practice, in terms of functional movement and also on more subtle levels.

We will discover how our breath links us in to the natural bandhas in the body, and through various pranayama techniques, we will get closer to the interaction between the bandhas and the breath.
