Yoga for Beginners - starts Thursday 23 April 18.00 - 19.30

This 8 week course for beginners is suitable for people who are completely new to yoga or those with some experience that would like to take it back to the basics. The course will provide an introduction to some of the key physical postures (asana), the foundations and some key techniques of breathing (pranayama) and the art of relaxation (shavasana).

The course is suitable for all abilities and fitness levels. You do not need to be flexible, fit or in shape! Learn yoga from the comfort of your own home and experience the benefits of yoga.

Asana

You will learn floor-based, seated and standing practices and postures (asana), including forward bending, backward bending, twists and balances. Throughout the course you will learn the various elements of 'The Sun Salutation' - a dynamic sequence practised across many styles of yoga. By the end of the course you will have had experience of putting the sequence together in a flowing way.

Pranayama

The way that we breathe plays a fundamental role in our health and learning to work with the breath is fundamental to learning yoga. You will learn some of the basics about breathing in yoga, including some structured breathing practices that will support you to breathe more consciously and fully, not only during your yoga practice but during your daily life.

Shavasana

Time will also be dedicated to learning the practice of conscious relaxation (shavasana) whereby you lie comfortably on the floor and are guided into a relaxed state. Allowing the body to come to stillness following the movement and the breathwork can enable a deep state of rest where the body and mind can be reset and balance can be restored.

Bandhas & The Breath (coming soon)

'Bandha' means 'lock'. In yoga there are several locks that we can create with our bodies which have an affect on both a physical and an energetic level.

In this workshop we will explore the 4 main yogic locks - Mooladhara Bandha (the root lock), Uddiyanana Bandha (the stomach lock), Jalandhara (the throat lock)and Maha Bandha (the great lock).

Through a series of physical explorations and breathing techniques, we will identify the different areas in the body where these locks are located, understanding how they might offer us a deepening of our yoga practice, in terms of functional movement and also on more subtle levels.

We will discover how our breath links us in to the natural bandhas in the body, and through various pranayama techniques, we will get closer to the interaction between the bandhas and the breath.
